The medical model focuses on the causes and symptoms of the disability and on its treatment
The medical model focuses on the causes and symptoms of the disability and on its treatment. While it does have its advantages, the person is seen by the model as abnormal and remains until the condition is cured. The medical model looks at whats wrong with the person and not what a person needs. It creates low expectation and leads to people loosing independence, choice and control in their own lives. The social model of disability focuses on the environment in which the disabled person lives.
With this model of disability the environment should be adapted to meet the needs of the disabled person, not the other way around.
