The issue of banning assault weapons and large magazines has been debated for many and is once again a hot topic due to recent mass shootings. This bloodshed and death that our country has from assault weapons in the hands of citizens and criminals. These shootings are not going to stop until our government decides to make some changes with our gun laws. Assault rifles do not have a place in our home and society and that is why the safety of U.S. citizens is vital and banning assault rifles will help make the United States a safer place. Our government needs to enforce and place stricter gun laws and also ban assault rifles. Government also needs to have a stricter background checks.
Our founding fathers established the 2nd amendment which states that citizens should be allowed to carry guns in our homes for protection and safety, however during that time, muskets were the primary weapon and they only fired 4 rounds per minute. Today we have assault rifles that are designed to deliver fatal wounds to multiple people within a short time period. Assault rifles are dangerous because of the rapid-fire capability, deadly range, and damage. According to a study done by the Violence Policy Center regarding assault weapons such as the AR-15. The semiautomatic assault rifles like the AR-15 and the AK-47 have no differences and that they are both deadly. While there are many different kinds assault rifles, the AR-15 is the most manufactured and purchased in the United States. The AR-15 is considered a civilian rifle and

the AK-47 is considered a military rifle. The AK-47 is cheaper and less accurate than the AR-15. The AK-47 is a military rifle that fires more than one bullet per trigger pull, and fires a larger caliber, while the AR-15 is a civilian rifle that only fires one bullet per trigger pull and uses a smaller caliber bullet. According to USA today “the NRA has called the AR-15 the semi-automatic, civilian version the most popular rifle in America and estimates Americans own more than 8 million of them.” According to CNN a licensed gun dealer is required under federal law to run potential buyers through the criminal background check by either online or by phone through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The process usually takes around 90 seconds, and if all the records are in the right place, it would prevent a purchaser who was previously involuntarily committed or determined as mentally incompetent from getting the gun. But, federal law does not require states to make these mental health records part of background check system and many fail to voluntarily report the records. Millions of people have been forced into hospitals for mental health system but are not included in the system. Roughly about 30 percent of the estimated mental health records in the U.S. can be found in NICS. According to a study by the control organization for gun safety since 2009, every one of the country’s mass shooters may have slipped through NICS. Our government needs to start looking at their mental history. The number of people with anger management issues and mental illness has increased dramatically over the last few decades. The reason that make people so prone to violent outbursts are important and need to be addressed to reduce the stress on the individuals that are most receptive to aggressive reactions. Banning people with a serious mental illness from using assault rifles will solve the problems that cause these people to be violent. However, this will remove the most dangerous tool they can use to harm others. Because it’s
