Many students use cheating as a method to advance in their work and studies. Despite the fact that cheating is generally a punishable offense in academic spaces, a large number of students do not always consider the consequences of submitting work that is not their own. While students may have varying reasons and excuses for cheating, they tend not to recognize that it can negatively impact their academic careers and hinder their progress in the future.
There are many reasons that compel students to cheat on their work, but many of these reasons can stem from a few basic causes. One of the motives of cheating is procrastination. Students may overestimate the amount of time that they have to study for an exam or not consider the amount of information they have to retain. As a result, students may feel overwhelmed with their work load, which inclines them to cheat in order to receive a passing grade. Another cause of cheating is laziness. Students may not feel motivated to complete their own work. In consequence, they might copy someone else’s work or create cheat sheets to avoid having to do their own assignments. Finally, students might feel desperate to pass a class but might not feel confident in their own ability to make good grades. For that reason, students might cheat on exams in order to stay within the means of passing a subject.
While the reasons to cheat may vary from student to student, the consequences of cheating are unequivocal. One of the consequences of cheating is that students may run the risk of plagiarizing someone else’s work and turning it in as their own. In many cases, instructors will not give credit on assignments to students who cheat or use someone else’s work. However, in some instances, the ramification for plagiarism is expulsion from their school or program. In addition, cheating may cause students to lose credibility within their institution. They might not be able to receive certain opportunities because of their known history of cheating on their work. Lastly, students tend not to truly learn the material when they do not produce their own work. They gain a false sense of confidence in their abilities to retain information, and as a result, hinder their own progress moving forward in their studies.
While cheating can seem like a means to an end, students should consider the many negative effects it can have on their academic careers. Instead of cheating, students should ask for help with material they are struggling with as well as properly prepare for their exams and assignments. In turn, students will gain confidence and knowledge that will benefit them in the future.
