Justice Article on Homosexuality
We hear about homosexuals every day, but what does being a homosexual actual mean? Homosexual is being involved with or sexually attracted to a person of the same sex. If the couple are men, the term regularly used is gay and if the couple are women the term regularly used is lesbian. Many people like myself have many questions when it comes to homosexuality which is why I choose this topic. Questions that I hear all the time are, is homosexuality a disease? Can you be born a homosexual? If you really are a homosexual can you be convinced otherwise or try and be straight? In my essay I plan to unfold what the true meaning of homosexuality is as well as whether or not it is accepted in todays society as well as the Bible.
According to the American Psychological Association sexual orientation is developed throughout a person’s lifetime therefore you are not born with it. Also, because sexual orientation is about relationship and we are not born in a relationship or with attraction then we simply could not be born a homosexual.
In 1973 the Board of Trustees for the American Psychiatric Association voted to have homosexuality removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of mental disorders which means it was not considered a mental illness therefore with therapy a person’s sexual orientation can be changed from homosexual to heterosexual. A person feelings and desires may be hard to overcome and simply “change” but according to the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) homosexuality can be reversed if you simply address the unwanted homosexual feelings.
Is homosexuality a disease? Well although it is not considered a disease, if a married woman leaves her husband for another woman the World Health Organization would classify her with sexual relationship disorder. In my opinion if a organization is calling it a disorder than it is more than just a feeling that they are going through and maybe be easier said then done to change their way of life.
Some interesting facts that I did not know about Homosexuality are:
• Only 1 to 3 percent of the population are true homosexuals.
• The average number of sex partners a homosexual has is 4 times higher than that of a heterosexual.
• 43 percent of gay men had over 500 partners in their lifetime
• 28 percent of gay men had over 1000 partners in their lifetime
• According to the Centers for Disease Control homosexuals a thousand times more likely to contract aids.
I truly believe in my heart whatever makes someone happy they should run with it and you only live once so truly and undeniably enjoy your life to the fullest whether that be with the same sex or opposite sex. After seeing some of these facts my opinion shifted a bit because it is sad to see the difference in many things for instance the increase in their risk of aids and the number of partners they have most likely due to the fact that they don’t marry and instead have multiple partners.
My belief in God is higher then my belief in many other things, and although I do not go to Church as much as I should I Pray every day multiple times a day, which brings me to my next question how Christianity takes to homosexuals and what does the Bible say about this matter. The Christian view is sex outside of a male and female marriage is wrong. God wants sex to be a meaningful, powerful, reproductive, intimate commitment between a male and female who have a binding marriage. The Bible views homosexuality as a sin. God blesses female and male marriages and does not agree with anything outside of the relationship. Christians do not judge and are not here to judge but they do embrace what they know is right and trust the bible whole heartily. Christians want to express the truth and the truth is unless sex is happening between a male and female who are married it is a sin and against the Bible and the Lord.
This opened my eyes because I until this day thought happiness can come in all shapes and sizes, but to think I was going against what God has spoken is hurtful. God states love thy neighbor but what we fail to realize is he says love God first, how can we love our neighbor who sins and does not follow our God whom we should love above all? God forgives all even those who have had homosexual tendencies and we will have that perfect world he promised us but not on our will or our time.
Bible verses about man to man or woman to woman relationships are: Leviticus 18:22: ” Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” Also, Leviticus 20:13: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Wow, put to death and their blood would be on them, to me this says you made your bed now lay in it. Its scary to think that everyday without even meaning it we sin, scary to think you can’t marry and have sex with the person you want because your sinning, but to me what’s the scariest is going against God and his will. I do what I can in my power to not sin but we all fall short of this sometimes. We all have problems, but how many problems do homosexuals face daily? Way beyond the harassment and is that any way to live?
Homosexuals have been fighting for equal rights for many decades. Gay rights movement show some light in 1960 with little harassment. The outbreak of AIDS in 1960 was a set back for the gay rights movement, but years later the “don’t ask, don’t tell “passed a law granting same sex couples to register as domestic partners granting them some rights, and also allowing gay men into the army as long as his sexuality was not mentioned. 1993 same sex marriages were banned, and they were not able to get the benefits of marriage nor the certificate. Today times have changed with a lot more rights and some states allowing same sex marriages and although now I know how wrong it is, I am glad to see that maybe this will lead to less harassing and more understanding because no one wants another Matthew Shepherd case, a 21-year-old boy who was tied to a tree, pistol whipped, beaten and left to die.
I have once thought that loving a person and being in a relationship with them even though it’s the same sex is ok and really is not hurting anyone. The truth is it is hurting people it is hurting the very people who are doing it because they are going against God and Gods will. The two involved are sinning against their body and their soul. Only a man and a woman can become one flesh, not two men nor two women. Everyday we see gay rights advocating to what homosexuals are doing as if its ok to commit this sin, but what if it was a husband cheating on his wife? Or a 15-year-old having sex out of marriage would we advocate for those sins, no? then why are we advocating for the people who are sinning everyday using their bodies for other then what God intended them to use it for.
Social Media and T.V is another perfect example of what we perceive to be true is not. Programs are almost idolizing and promoting gay relationships like there is nothing to it. I have not yet given up on T.V but after this assignment I just may. I know a Christian family who does not own a T.V nor do they listen to music other then the Christian channel, when I called her up to ask why she simply told me Saundra, do not be deceived and at that moment I knew exactly what she meant.
God loves the sinners but hates the sin. God will forgive us all if we confess our sins even for those who are homosexual. I have learned a lot about this topic and my views have changed with everything that I have learned. The one thing that stays true and dear to me is that no matter the heart ship God will always be our rock. Homosexuality is a daily struggle for those who have to deal with it everyday and I feel sorry for the harassment and even killings, but we need to remember as a whole that we will be forgiven.
