Racial Profiling is one of the longest standing Social problem in our nation as it affects a wide range group of people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, and religion. Being profiled occurs in a variety of environments and can cause the victim to go through emotional, psychological, mental and in even more severe cases financial as well as physical problems. Opportunities are often denied in certain careers for the fact that certain individuals do not look the part or are perceived as less educated because of the color of their skin. Most recently some authorities especially, Police officers perform acts of Cruelness upon people of certain race because of safety needs but they need to take into account the innocent civilian’s safety as well. Our minded are always being influenced by our own society to the point that we often categorize people into groups of color, race, national origin, religion instead of judging them by their characters.
The U.S Constitution 14th amendment states that there will be ” Equal Protection of the law” as it covers racial discrimination, reproductive rights, election recounts, and gender discrimination but not much is done with these laws are not obeyed. The victims who experience profiling are often alienated and humiliated in front of a crowd as it also puts idea in people head that certain races to behave a certain way or are capable of something dangerous. Individual fear being alienated that they will follow the crowd for their own protection which often leads to hate crimes. In other cases police officers can also be profiled because the actions of other officers toward the minorities in our country. Profiling is associated with judging another individual in order to be aware of what they might be capable of doing because of their race.
As most are aware profiling occurs amongst a variety of races in plenty of different setting and it happens to often that we almost become desensitized by that is going on. Arabians and Muslims are usually the first group of people to be searched in an airline and if they are caught speaking their native language in most cases they are removed from the plane. Blacks and Latinos are looked upon as unintelligent and even are viewed as physical threat which is by they are often jailed more than any other race. As it may come to a shock to some even Caucasians are profiled by being viewed as physically weak which leads to them being easier targets of receiving verbal threats by other people as well as certain authorities.
There is an abundance of emotional, psychological, mental, financial, and physical issues the victim experience during and after being alienated. Post-Traumatic stress Disorder also known as “PTSD” is a common disorder a victim might develop due to experiencing a traumatic event. When an individual is profiled as first they lose their sense of self-worth and if you are not strong minded enough you might have an urge to act out since you are going to be perceived that way anyways. Many issues are created when someone who is equal is treated less or a suspect although they have not done anything wrong to be treated this way.
I myself have also experience being profiled and even though I did not get physical get assaulted it was life altering experience.
