“One of the most important human activities is managing. Ever since people began forming groups to accomplish aims they could not achieve as individuals, managing has been essential to ensure the coordination of individual efforts”, Harold Koontz and Heinz Weihrich, 2010.
Management as defined by Harold Koontz and Heinz Weihrich is the process of designing and maintaining an environment in which individuals, working together in groups, efficiently accomplish selected aims. The main managerial functions are planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling.
The major aim of all mangers is to create surplus, which must be done efficiently and effectively. This surplus in business organizations is profit, in non-profit organizations is satisfaction of needs (creating the desired impact), schools and colleges create a surplus through generation and dissemination of knowledge as well as providing service to the community.
Koontz and Weihrich define an organization as a group of people working together to achieve common goals. A modern organization is very dynamic and flexible in its operation and focuses. (Harold Koontz, 2010)
