Entering the school counseling program developed from a passion for children
Entering the school counseling program developed from a passion for children. I understand that all children have different personalities, derive from different cultural backgrounds and socio-economic statuses. Knowing that it is not the students fault they are in the situations they are facing, I want to be the person the student can look to for help, enhance and promote the importance of an education, and be a mediator between the students, teachers, parents, and community. Being a school counselor will give me the opportunity to make a difference in the student’s life and make a lasting impression. Using my interpersonal and intrapersonal skills will brand me as a competent school counselor. For instance, being an active listener, knowing how to manage conflict, using verbal communication, being patient and open minded, and possessing leadership skills will show them my rapport in dealing with the students.
Being the person, a student can look toward for help is a major responsibility. Living in today’s society where technology and social media are taking over, the students need to have someone educated about current circumstances to guide and assist them in handling situations that may arise. That is helping the students social/emotional development which is one of three components in the Comprehensive School Counseling Program. This component is important because this is how the students will interact with others in society. I will have to model how to deal with situations with the students. While being a role model for the students, I will have to be conscious and certain about my intrapersonal skills, values and beliefs. Equally, being aware of my self-esteem, open mindedness, my own thinking, and being able to understand and manage my own emotions will make me a great counselor and give the best to the students. I would love to see all the students’ lives I will enhance to excel beyond all limits and expectations.
Enhancing and promoting the importance of an education will give students a chance to a better future. Enhancing the educational process delivered to the students takes skill, time, and energy. Ensuring that we develop a rigorous educational plan that is data-driven and developmentally appropriate to the student’s needs for their success is important. Teaching a student above their developmental level will cause them to withdraw mentally from the lesson and exhibit behavioral problems. Teaching a student below their developmental level will not enhance their critical thinking opportunities or move them forward. Tracking their process through data will help the teachers develop the proper educational plan for each students’ success. Promoting the importance of an education by teaching students at a young age that an education will take them a long way and keep them motivated for a prosperous future. Knowing that each student is not meant for higher education, providing information on alternative options will still provide academic excellence. As a counselor, it is my job and passion to assist in allow students to explore all options of academic and career development. Academic and career development are two other components of the three Comprehensive School Counseling Program.
As a counselor, I will be the voice of reason between the students, teachers, parents and the community. Using my active listening, problem solving, and verbal communication skills will make this liaison stronger. Communicating with all of the important people in the students lives, we are promoting achievement. Making students are aware there is a team that supports them will give them hope and encouragement. As mentioned, every student’s cultural background and socio-economic status is different. Being aware and providing opportunities to the student’s family for assistance in the community will help the student have one less worry while they are at school. Counselors help teachers by giving them the right tools to assist in their teaching to accommodate the students in the classroom. Making sure the student is getting everything that they need educationally is the counselors ultimate goal.
A passion for supporting children has inspired me to enter the school counseling program. Being a school counselor will give me opportunities to make a difference in every student’s life. Knowing all students have different personalities, derive from different cultural backgrounds and socio-economic statuses gives me a heart to be the person that the student can look to for help, as well as, enhance and promote the importance of an education, and be a mediator between the students, teachers, parents, and community. I will ensure the students are receiving an education that is in their best interest.
